Here's a little chart for divining one's future prospects from the number of hoots one hears an Owl give at night...
One hoot: A death is foretold.
Two hoots: Success will come to you soon.
Three hoots: You will soon have a lover. If you are engaged, you will marry soon.
Four hoots: There will be a disturbance or an argument.
Five hoots: There will soon be an opportunity for you to travel. If you are in the midst of a journey, you will arrive safely.
Six hoots: Guests will arrive soon, or you will soon receive word from one who is absent.
Seven hoots: The will be confusion, or someone near you is telling lies. Be cautious.
Eight hoots: A sudden disaster, or an unexpected loss.
Nine hoots: Good fortune; wealth is coming to you.
If the Owl is very vocal and you hear more than nine calls, it is a sign of great good luck and indicates that a heartfelt wish will come true.
